PMJJBY at a Glance: A government-backed term life insurance scheme offering ₹2 lakh death benefit to any Indian with a savings bank account. Premium is just ₹436/year (auto-debited). Age group: 18–50 years. No medical examination required. Launched in 2015 under Jan Suraksha Yojana.

Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) is one of India's most inclusive social security initiatives. Launched on 9 May 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it provides affordable life insurance to millions of Indians who previously had no financial safety net for their families.

With a premium of just ₹436 per year — less than ₹1.20 per day — a family gets a ₹2 lakh payout in case of the policyholder's death due to any reason (accident or natural). Over 20 crore people have already enrolled in this scheme.

What is PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana?#

PMJJBY is a one-year renewable term life insurance policy. It is offered through banks and post offices in partnership with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and several private life insurers. The premium is automatically debited from your savings bank account every year, making it hassle-free.

Unlike traditional insurance, there is:

Frequently Asked Questions#

1. Is ₹2 lakh enough life insurance? PMJJBY is a starter safety net, not a complete financial plan. It provides basic protection for low-income families. For better coverage, consider it alongside PM Suraksha Bima Yojana (accidental cover) and a separate term plan.

2. What if there is insufficient balance in my account during auto-debit? Your policy will lapse. You can revive it by paying the annual premium with good health self-certification. Contact your bank for revival.

3. Can I enroll in PMJJBY after 50 years of age? No. Enrollment is only open to those aged 18–50. However, if you enrolled before age 50, coverage continues until age 55.

4. Is PMJJBY the same as PMSBY? No. PMJJBY provides life insurance (death for any reason). PM Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) provides accidental death and disability insurance at just ₹20/year. Both are separate but complementary.

5. How do I check if I'm already enrolled? Check your bank passbook, statement, or net banking. If ₹436 was debited in May/June toward "PMJJBY Premium", you are enrolled.
